We are focused on supporting women-led households so that they can support themselves and their families. They are typically widows, single mothers, grandmothers, aunts or guardians who look after the children. They are amongst the most vulnerable group in Africa.
In traditional rural African societies, women marry young and stay at home to look after the children. The loss of a husband or bread winner is traumatic and with no state support, usually cause hardship to the family. It forces the women and older children who should be attending school into low wage jobs with earnings that is insufficient to pay for food and shelter. It is this financial burden which sometimes makes it necessary for the children to be withdrawn from school. Read the Widows’ Perspective
We support the women with counselling and provide classes to train them in business skills so that they can start their own small businesses to generate income in a sustainable way.
