The Transformative Power of Education and Knowledge

by ACT

“When we read aloud, we don’t just teach words,

we open doors to new worlds, foster curiosity,

and ignite the imagination of young minds.”

Celebrating World Read Aloud Day

World Read Aloud Day is a vibrant reminder of the joy, connection, and power that stories and reading bring to our lives. It is a day where we can amplify the voices of storytellers, cherish the gift of literacy, and, most importantly, advocate for education as a fundamental right for every child, regardless of their background or circumstance.

According to Global Citizen, 90% of children in Africa struggle to achieve reading comprehension by the age of 10. This situation limits their access to valuable opportunities and the benefits that reading can bring to their personal and social development.

At the African Child Trust (ACT), we are reminded daily of the life-changing potential of education. Since 1998, ACT has supported nearly 16,000 children in gaining an education, empowering them to develop the ability to read by providing essential educational resources for their success. For children in underprivileged communities, learning is more than just a pathway to a better future – it is a bridge to opportunity, empowerment, and hope.

Opening Minds through Education

Education opens doors that might otherwise remain firmly shut. Children who receive quality education are not only equipped with academic knowledge but also develop critical thinking skills, resilience, and self-confidence. They grow into adults who are able to break free from the cycle of poverty, contribute meaningfully to their communities, and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

Yet, millions of children, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, still face barriers to accessing this life-altering resource. From poverty, economic hardships and gender discrimination to the lack of schools and learning materials, the obstacles are daunting but not insurmountable. Reading aloud is one of the simplest yet most impactful ways to spark a love for learning and knowledge. It goes beyond the mechanics of reading – it brings stories to life, nurtures curiosity, and strengthens the bond between the reader and listener. Knowledge is more than a collection of facts; it is a tool for empowerment.

For children in vulnerable communities as in rural African communities, where books may be scarce and literacy rates low, reading aloud creates an inclusive learning environment. It allows children to imagine worlds beyond their immediate surroundings and dream of possibilities they may never have considered before. Each story told aloud is a seed of hope, an opportunity to envision a brighter future.

This year on World Read Aloud Day, we at ACT celebrate the potential of every child to become a changemaker through the power of knowledge. ACT beneficiary Harriet – at the finishing line

The story of Harriet, from a village in the Busoga region of Uganda, is a powerful reminder of how reading can shape a child’s future from the journey of loss to an aspiring lawyer.

At just 10 years old, Harriet faced an unimaginable tragedy, losing her mother in 2008 and her father the following year to a crocodile attack while he was fishing. Left to care for her four younger siblings alongside her grandfather, a struggling farmer, her future seemed uncertain. Yet, two years later, with ACT support and through the power of books and storytelling, Harriet found hope, resilience, and a path forward. Today, she is pursuing a degree in Law, a dream made possible through ACT. In a recent letter, she expressed her gratitude:

“Due to your tremendous help and the grace of God, I am pursuing a university degree in Law, and I don’t take it for granted.”

Harriet’s story shows how ACT is helping to build brighter futures for children in need.
