Celebrating International Women’s Day
#ChooseToChallenge #IWD2021
International Women’s Day (March 8) was created to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, and to point out all the progress that is yet to be made. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
The theme this year encourages all to Choose to Challenge:
“A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change. So, let’s all choose to challenge”.

This theme resonates with us at ACT. We challenge gender inequality every day by helping vulnerable girls and women, by raising awareness, but also by encouraging diversity as best as we can in all aspects of our work.
At the core of what we do is empowering women and girls in woman-led households in rural African society. These are mothers, grandmothers, aunts and young girls who, although still children, have the responsibility of care and looking after younger siblings. Through education, training and provision of income generating activities, we are challenging the status quo and promoting change by empowering the women so that they can sustain their families and help with development of their community. Being a single parent is difficult enough, it is even more of a challenge in rural African society which traditionally are patriarchal.
At ACT, we are committed to changing the narrative: our objective is to end the cycle of poverty, and that starts with education. Because of their circumstances the women we work with in Africa often have limited aspirations and can feel useless. It is why our projects are focussed on encouraging the women to realise their talents and turn them into income by training them in business skills to gain financial independence and confidence. Broadening their horizons is not only beneficial for them but also impacts on their children especially the girls. Change starts from challenging our world in the small things of our daily lives.

“No one of us is free until everybody is free”.

As the world celebrate International Women’s Day, ACT stands strong with women all over the world and especially the women and widows in rural Africa. Their struggle for breakthrough from poverty is all our struggle. No one should be left behind.
