“I know the plans I have for you, plans to bless you and not harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11 –
The Child Sponsor
In December, two children in a village near Webuye, Kenya received the news that their UK sponsor, a Mr B, had sent an extra amount of money as a gift for their families for Christmas. The two families, women-led households, were surprised by the news: Is it true and is this really for us? Are you sure and can we really keep it? The news not only made their Christmas special and brightened their lives, but it was also more – it gave the families hope for a better future for their children.
For Emmanuel and Purity, both 10 years old from different families but united by the same UK sponsor, Mr B, this special gift at Christmas was rare and unexpected. Neither had ever received a Christmas present before. Mr B donates every month in order to support the two children’s education and welfare. In December he donated an extra £50 as Christmas gift to be shared equally between the two families. The £50 comes to around 7,500 Kenya Shillings (KES) or 3,750 KES per family. To put this in context, recent World Bank report estimates that 36% of Kenyans live below the poverty line on less than 200 KES a day. It’s proof that one UK pound can go a very long way, bearing in mind that Kenya is one of the richer countries in Africa.
Emmanuel and Purity’s story started when Mr B found out about the work that ACT is doing to rescue disadvantaged children and women in Africa from poverty and made a decision to do what he could to help two children. Emmanuel and Purity are the beneficiaries of his conscious decision to show kindness, but who knows how it will end? Like a seed planted on good ground that is well watered, who can predict how much fruit it would yield? How far will his act of kindness spread — to mothers, grandparents, siblings, school mates? Not counting their own children and children’s children in future? Who knows?
To the many ACT child sponsors, donors and supporters like Mr B — to all of you and from all of us at ACT — we say thank you for believing in our children. Thank you for remembering them and giving them hope for a better future.
